You are following one of the standard conventions of modern online marketing, and likely driving better results and ROI for your organization as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Analytics UTM parameters are pretty easy to generate if you are familiar with the conventions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>utm_source: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source web site or advertising campaign that is sending traffic to your web site<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples: Google, Facebook, PartnerSiteXYZ, Monthly Newsletter.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>utm_medium:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The advertising or marketing category.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples: PPC, Retargeting, Display, email.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>utm_campaign:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The marketing or advertising campaign name.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emaples: SpringCampaign, CompetitorKeywords, Brand Search.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>utm_term:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Paid search keywords.Normally this is not manually tagged.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REQUIRED: use utm_term={keyword} in Google or Bing to have the Search Keyword inserted automatically.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Utm_content: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional, use to differentiate similar content, such as Adgroup or specific links.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProTip:\u00a0 You can use utm_content={device} to have Google automatically insert whether the visitor came from Computer (c), Mobile (m), or Tablet (t)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These parameters go on the end of your web site URL. They do not change the destination when a visitor clicks, but they simply add tracking information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact way you add them together is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? after your web site URL<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parameter (utm_source, utm_campaign, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">= sign, then your value<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&amp; between each parameter \/ value pair (&amp;utm_campaign=campaignname&amp;&#8230;)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which ends up producing a URL such as<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yoursite.com?utm_campaign=YourCampaign&amp;utm_medium=PPC&amp;utm_source=GoogleAds&amp;utm_content=Optional&amp;utm_term=%7Bkeyword\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/www.YourSite.com?utm_campaign=YourCampaign&amp;utm_medium=PPC&amp;utm_source=GoogleAds&amp;utm_content=Optional&amp;utm_term={keyword<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">}<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of online URL builders, if you don\u2019t feel comfortable creating them by hand. No need to do that, until you become very familiar with UTM parameters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course like every link anywhere in your marketing, BE SURE TO CLICK ON IT before using it. It only takes a second and can save you from a lot of pain later on. \ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How do you keep track?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that is how to build Google Analytics UTM Campaign tags. But more importantly, how do you keep track of all the different ones?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And make sure you are being consistent so you don\u2019t mix up different mediums like PPC, CPC, or capitalization?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistency is key to being able to make the most of reports and analytics going forward. Plus once someone clicks on a URL, those Campaign, Source, and Medium values are registered in Google Analytics. You can always change them later, but then you end up with multiple values tracking to a single campaign.
